I feel like a lot of these biopics about famous bands or musicians always seem to follow the same formula. They show how they got started, their rise to fame, them dealing with drug or alcohol abuse, having trouble with his love life, band falling apart, a big concert, and them usually dying at the end. Thats probably because a lot of musicians sadly go through the same things. Though it usually varies on the musician or band. So when I heard about this movie I pretty much expected it to be the same. While it did have a lot of the same stuff in it, like the band itself, it was still fun and entertaining.

Bohemian Rhapsody tells the story of Freddy Mercury and the creation of the band Queen. It follows the bands rise to fame, the making of their songs, the impact they had, and their struggles. The story mostly focusses on Freddy Mercury and how he gave the band it's identity, and his struggles in his career and social life. And of course it touches on his sexuality and his relationships. Without even knowing the true story, I pretty much knew what was going to happen, but I was surprised by how it all happened.
Being about a band as unique and experimental as Queen, I thought the movie would be would be very stylistic and be shown like a music video. But the movie managed to be stylistic and realistic at the same time. It's shot very seriously when it's showing more of the serious moments, but gets more stylistic when their either making or recording songs. I like how the scenes when there recording are shot and edited in way that goes with the music. I also like how they sometimes cut between them recording and performing the song. Little things like this help keep the movie unique and visually interesting.
Rami Malek does a great job portraying Freddy Mercury. He can act eccentric while also being able to be serious and sympathetic. All the actors do a great job of telling a dramatic story while also being very funny as well. The one problem I have with the film is that some of the scenes go on a little too long and slow down the film a bit. However, it does even out with the fast and upbeat music scenes.
While it can be a little slow and predictable, Bohemian Rhapsody is still a fun and and enjoyable story of one of the most interesting singers ever. If you are a fan of the band or jus like musical biopics then I say go check it out.
I give it a 4/5.
