World War 2. Mad scientists. Zombies. Hijinks ensues. Thats what I thought i was going to get going into this. The trailer looked like it was going to be just a dumb zombie action movie, just set in World War 2. But I still saw it because it looked like it would just be a fun action movie. Going in expecting all that I ended up enjoying more than I thought.

The movie takes place during World War 2 where a group of soldiers are sent into France to take out a radio tower. But they soon find out that the place is also being used for secret experiments to raise the dead. It then becomes a race agin time to destroy the tower, and a battle against the Nazis and the living dead. Think Inglorious Bastards meets Resident Evil. It is as ridiculous as it sounds but it is also better than it needed to be.

The best way I can describe it is a B movie that they actually tried harder on. For being o zombie movie, there aren't really that many zombies in it. There's not much zombie action until the final third. Most of it is told like a straight forward action film, focusing more on the soldiers and their mission. It's kind of like Predator where it doesn't get super natural until the middle. The best part of the movie is the action are the scenes are creative and exciting. It even gets going right away from the beginning with an intense plane crash. All the characters are the standard action movie archetypes like the stern leader, the wisecracker, and the one who always wants to do the right thing. All the actors do a go job for these kinds of rolls. The best part is the villain in just how over the top evil he is, especially at the end.

Even though the premise is ridiculous and kind of silly, the action and the characters make Overlord an enjoyable action/horror romp. If you like action/horror or want to see a WW2 movie that is not depressing than I say check it out.

I give it a 3.8/5
