Of all the movies coming out this year, Ready Player One was the one that I was most excited because I really enjoyed the book it was based on. Also, I actually had read the book (actually I listened to it) because I heard that Spielberg was directing the movie adaptation of it and that got me interested. After finishing the book I thought that Spielberg was the perfect choice to direct the movie adaption because his style of film making would work for a story full of science fiction themes and 80s pop-culture references (I think it even referenced a few of his films). When the trailers came out I was excited because it looked cool, but I had noticed right away that there were a lot of changes from the source material. Though it still appeared to be the same overall story and setting, I knew there were going to be a lot of scenes that weren't in the book, character changes, or different references. So I went to see it with the mind set that it wasn't going to be the same as the book and more of it's own thing, but even though it was different, much like the book it was a lot of fun.

It takes place in a dystopian future where things have gotten so bad that everyone escapes to a virtual game called the Oasis where they can do and be anything they want. But when its creator dies and leaves his entire fortune to anyone who can who find the prize in the game a boy named Wade must find it before a big organization does and take over the game. As I said before this movie is full of references to 80's movies and shows, and video games, but they are actually essential to the story rather than just being there. Because, most of the film takes place in a digital world most of it is in CGI, and even though it's not always perfect it's very similar the animation in many video games, which makes sense. Now I could go on and on about all the changes and how the book was better, well even though I did like the book a little more I thought it worked well as an adaption of the book and as a stand alone movie.

While it has a some big changes to the story like some plot points and characters, it still keeps the message and overall fun light hearted mood of the book; like a good adaption should. The action scenes are creative and exciting, and there is no short of funny moments and references. Even though the story can be silly it has a lot of good actors to make it engaging. If you read the book and liked all the references and funny satire than you would like this too, but if you haven't and just want to see a fun action sci/fi movie than you would like it as well.
